A Coastal Paradise of Pines & Sapphire Waters

While many visitors associate Istanbul exclusively with towering minarets, grand bazaars, and metropolitan traffic, Heybeliada offers a remarkably pristine natural escape. More than sixty percent of the island is blanketed in dense, protected Mediterranean maritime pines (Pinus brutia), aromatic wild rosemary, mastic shrubs, and bay laurel.

Because commercial combustion vehicles are strictly prohibited, the island's coastal waters and air remain exceptionally clean. Unlike the city’s mainland shorelines, the rocky capes and gravel coves of Heybeliada benefit from constant natural currents flowing between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, providing refreshingly transparent waters for swimming, snorkeling, and seaside walking.

Değirmenburnu Nature Park & The Historic Windmills

Extending into the sea on Heybeliada’s northwestern headland, Değirmenburnu Nature Park (Değirmenburnu Tabiat Parkı) is the island's largest and most accessible coastal recreation reserve. Spanning approximately 10 hectares of coastal woodlands, the park is named after the historic stone windmills (değirmenler) erected here in the late Ottoman era to grind grain using the vigorous winds blowing across the open sea.

The picturesque restored stone cylindrical tower of the principal windmill stands proudly upon the rocky bluffs overlooking the neighboring island of Burgazada. The park features shaded wooden picnic pergolas, children's adventure playgrounds, coastal cycling circuits, and a long shoreline promenade equipped with swimming pontoons and sunbathing platforms.

Alman Koyu (German Bay): The Wild Snorkeling Haven

For adventurous travelers and wild swimmers seeking complete tranquility away from commercial beach club music, Alman Koyu (German Bay) is widely celebrated as the finest wild swimming spot on Heybeliada. Tucked beneath the steep, pine-carpeted slopes of Makarios Tepesi on the island’s southwestern coast, this secluded cove earned its name during the First World War, when German naval officers and engineers stationed on Heybeliada frequented its secluded rocky ledges for private swims.

The beach consists of smooth, multicolored sea pebbles shelving quickly into deep, crystalline emerald water. The rocky walls flanking the bay are rich in marine life, making it a favorite destination for local snorkelers who observe small bream, octopus, sea bass, and vibrant sea anemones. Because the bay is accessible only via a steep 15-minute downhill dirt trail branching off the upper island loop road (or via private water taxi from the main harbor), it remains peaceful even on busy midsummer weekends.
